OpenFederation is an initiative focused on enabling communities to own their identity, data, and connections across the web—without being locked into a single platform or service.

Our mission is to help communities remain connected, resilient, and in control as digital platforms change. We work toward open, interoperable foundations that allow communities to move, evolve, and participate across networks—while preserving their history, relationships, and autonomy.

Our work is guided by three core pillars:

Ownership
Communities keep control of their presence and history.

Portability
Move between services without losing people or context.

Interoperability
Connect across networks instead of rebuilding from zero.

Technical direction

At a technical level, we explore federation through open social protocols and interoperable standards, with an emphasis on portability, composability, and long-term resilience—rather than a single application or platform.

How we approach it

OpenFederation is currently in an early phase, shaping approaches and validating ideas. We focus on designing federated, standards-based building blocks that can support long-term community ownership and cross-network interaction.
